Interstate 35 North

Interstate 35 is a major road that runs north-south in the United States, all the way from the Mexico-US border up to Lake Superior. I35, as it’s known, cuts through Iowa and Minnesota on the northern end of its journey. I grew up in Iowa but moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to go to school and stayed to work, and all of my immediate family has also since moved to Minneapolis.

Two years ago, upon returning from a late-November visit with my then 92-year-old grandfather in Iowa, I had to pull over and turn around to capture some night fog rolling in over the road and barren fields. In the process, I came to the realization that Interstate 35 represents a significant literal and metaphorical departure in my life – from the place where I grew up, the place where half of my family has lived for many generations, the place I once called home.
